Police said they were called to an Ilam Road address around 11:45 p.m.
The victim was taken to the hospital, he remains in serious condition.
The 19-year-old man was charged with causing bodily harm with reckless disregard and will appear before Christchurch District Council on June 1.
Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells said in a statement that there had been a number of single-punch attacks in Christchurch last year.
“It is worrying to see this level of violence on a regular basis and this type of attack can have devastating consequences for victims – in some cases it can lead to death.”
