The general director of the state-owned company “Ukrhydroenergo” Ihor Syrota states that half of the destroyed Kakhovskaya HPP is already under water, and erosion is increasing.
“We see that washouts are increasing. The station – we are convinced that there was an explosion inside the station in the engine room – broke in half. Half of the station is already under water, the other half is also slipping. There is an earth spillway dam outside the station, erosion is happening there,” he said on the air of the national telethon.
According to him, the Kakhov reservoir and the station played an important role in the water supply of the southern regions, but the HPP also regulated alternative sources that began to develop in Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.
“These are solar panels, wind power generation. They need regulatory powers. This role was performed by the Kakhovskaya station. Of course, we are already developing projects today, we are looking at what needs to be done and how to complete it. But the implementation of such a project will take at least 5 years,” added Ihor Syrota.
At dawn on June 6, it became known about the partial the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam. Ukrainian government accused of undermining the dam Russian occupation forces that have seized and control the hydroelectric plant since February 24, 2022. Russian occupation authorities instead assertsthat it was the Armed Forces that fired at and damaged the Kakhovskaya HPP dam at night.
The destruction of this hydraulic structure, say experts, posed a risk a large number of civilianspossible flooding of 80 settlements, and posed a threat to the cooling system of the reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP.
