Driven by holidaymakers from France and despite tourists from abroad who have partly turned away, attendance at tourist accommodation in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region this summer exceeded its pre-Covid-19 levels. , said Wednesday INSEE in a press release.

New element of Paca tourist landscape in the era of the coronavirus, tourists from France are increasing in number (+7.6% compared to 2019 figures), to the point of offsetting visitors from abroad (-5.9% ), who, “after having deserted the region during the health crisis (…) have not completely returned”.
With 42.1 million nights spent by customers in an establishment during the 2022 summer season (from April to September), tourist accommodation found a level of attendance 2.9% higher than that of 2019, the last year serving as a benchmark before the Covid-19 epidemic and its consequences on the movement of people in France and around the world.
Fourth busiest region
The Paca region thus experienced in 2022 a growth higher than that national (+ 2.3%) and was “the fourth most visited region, behind New-Aquitaine, Occitanie and Île-de-France”, specifies the press release.
Campsites and hotels each account for more than a third of overnight stays (nearly 39% and 38% respectively).
Two thirds of the occupants of the Paca campsites come from France (up 10.9%) and the clientele from abroad, “mainly European”, is also more numerous (+1.4%).
Hotel occupancy, which increased by 2.3% compared to 2019, contrary to the national trend at half mast (-0.8%), saw the share of its guests from France rise by 12.1% and has “benefited from the activity of high-end hotels”, displaying four stars and more, according to INSEE. For this range, overnight stays by tourists residing in France jumped by 29.5%.
The rest of collective accommodation (hotel residences, holiday villages, family homes or youth hostels), which represents almost a quarter of overnight stays in the region, saw its attendance drop by almost 3% compared to 2019 .
