A little more than two years after the events, the Lyon prosecutor’s office demanded the referral to the assizes of two people in the case of the assault by firearm on a Greek Orthodox priest.
According The worldit is logically the shooter, who wanted revenge on Nikolaos Kakavelakis, but also on his wife.
As a reminder, on October 31, 2020, the day after the attack on the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice which killed 3 people, a Greek Orthodox priest was shot and wounded in front of his church at 20 rue Saint-Lazare in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. We then think of a new terrorist attack. This is not the case: the suspect, of Georgian nationality, had been cuckolded by Nikolaos Kakavelakis, an influential figure in the Lyon Greek community. He had waited for him in front of his church, armed with a sawed-off shotgun. Then fired twice, including one at point-blank range while the victim was on the ground.
If the investigating judge follows the opinion of the prosecution by the end of the year, the alleged shooter could be tried for “violence with a firearm, followed by permanent disability”.
While his wife, who had had a relationship with the priest for a month at the time of the events, would be prosecuted for complicity after giving information on the whereabouts and the agenda of the victim.
Giorgi P. would thus escape the qualification of “attempted murder” which had been retained at the beginning of the investigation and which placed a much heavier sentence above his head.
Will Nikolaos Kakavelakis, who has since returned to Greece, attend the trial which could be held next year at the Palace of 24 Columns?
