The border guard, saving his brothers and not wanting to be captured, blew himself up with a grenade
Igor Dashko was born on June 18, 1977 in Sambir, Lviv region. He graduated from the Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in 1999 and since then served in the State Border Guard Service. He became a lieutenant colonel, deputy head of the border detachment.
Before the completion of the contract and dismissal from military service, Igor had a few months left. But the war changed the officer’s plans.
Since February 24, Mariupol has become a defensive outpost in eastern Ukraine. Igor Dashko, together with his brothers-in-arms, fought fierce battles with rashists for every square meter of the city.
One day, the unit, which included Lieutenant Colonel Dashko, selflessly held back the significantly superior enemy forces in a certain sector of the defense of the hero city. The enemy tried to break through the positions of the border guards, and Igor Dashko covered the departure of his brothers.
The border guard was seriously wounded and, in order not to be captured and prevent the enemy from seizing the radio station, he made a difficult decision – to blow himself up with a grenade. The last words of the warrior on the radio were: “Glory to Ukraine!”
“I am one hundred percent sure that for the pope to surrender would be a betrayal. I know what kind of person he was. He did so without hesitation, says daughter Maria. – He always said that he was ready to give his life for Ukraine. And gave…”
Igor Dashko died a hero’s death, without surrendering a single meter of Ukrainian land to the enemy, without stepping back. Lieutenant colonel awarded the rank Hero of Ukraine (posthumously).
