Russian shelling near the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant shows that Moscow is not afraid of the possibility of creating a nuclear disaster.
A high-ranking Pentagon official said that in the event of a nuclear disaster, the entire region would be affected, not only Ukraine.
“The attacks demonstrate Russia’s readiness to increase the risk of a nuclear security incident, which could have harmful consequences not only in Ukraine, but also in the entire region,” said a representative of the US Department of Defense.
Another representative of the Pentagon said that there is no intense fighting around the ZNPP. He added that Washington was monitoring reports that the Russians were allegedly planning to hand over control of the ZANP to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“And if they handed over control of the nuclear plant responsibly, that would be great,” he added.
At the same time, he clarified that there is no direct threat to the station yet.
