In Kolomyia, the families of Ukrainian Insurgent Army fighters received the awards given to UPA soldiers in the 1940s.
About it on your Facebook page wrote Director of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum of the Liberation Struggle named after Stepan Bandera Yaroslav Koretchuk.
The families of the rebels were delivered Military Merit Cross and Cross of Merit.
“According to the orders of the UPA command, in the 1940s, these awards were given to insurgents. However, the soldiers did not receive the awards themselves. For 80 years, they were given to families,” we read in the post.
As reported on the Facebook page of Bohdan Stanislavskyi, the leader of the Kolomyia community, relatives of soldiers of the Ukrainian insurgent army were found, but there is no connection with them. Therefore, the awards “will be waiting for people at the Kolomyia City History Museum.”
“We have three cases when it was not possible to establish relatives. And maybe she does not exist. After all, the Ukrainian rebels were a terror for the occupiers. The enemies were so afraid of ‘they destroyed entire families of freedom fighters from Ukraine, tried to erase any mention of them,’ Stanislavskyi wrote.
The awarding to UPA descendants of the honors of their insurgent ancestors was initiated by the “Coordinating Council to Honor OUN and UPA Soldiers”.
