POLITICS – President held meeting on compensation of Ukraine for damage caused by aggression of Russian Federation


President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting on compensation of Ukraine for the damage caused by the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

He noted that the question of compensation for the damage caused by the Russian invasion is an important element of the responsibility that the aggressor State must bear.

In order to create and implement the compensation mechanism, the President formed a special working group chaired by the President’s Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, which included representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers and prominent international lawyers from Ukraine and strangers.

The participants of the meeting discussed the progress of the negotiation process regarding the forced withdrawal of assets from the Russian Federation for the benefit of our state and coordinated steps in this direction.

In particular, work continues on the creation of a special compensation commission through the conclusion of a multilateral international agreement with Ukrainian partners. This commission will be able to examine claims for compensation for damage caused by the war. The adoption of a resolution by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on 22 June this year, which states that the Council of Europe will promote and ensure the implementation of a comprehensive accountability system for aggression against Ukraine by setting up an institutional compensation mechanism for our state. Similar work is carried out in the OSCE, the European Parliament, the UN and other organizations.

Additionally, Ukraine is negotiating with partners on how Russian assets, which are currently frozen in various jurisdictions, can be recovered and directed towards reparations for war damage.

During the meeting, it was noted that today our partners do not doubt that it should be done, and the only question is to find a legal mechanism.
