Russian hackers tried to hack cameras in Ukrainian homes to gather intelligence

Hackers from the Russian Federation wanted to remotely connect to the video surveillance system on the territory of the residential complex in order to collect information about the situation in the city and obtain data on the addresses of Ukrainian law enforcement officers and the possible movement of military equipment.

SBU cyber specialists neutralized the Russian one hacker attack on electronic systems of residential infrastructure in one of the border regions of Ukraine.

Through the Wi-Fi network of apartment buildings, hackers wanted to remotely connect to the video surveillance system for the territory of residential complexes, nearby roads, etc. Thus, they wanted to have a hidden channel to collect information about the situation in the city.

Russian hackers were also interested in information about the residence addresses of Ukrainian law enforcement officers and the possible movement of military equipment.

“However, the SBU employees worked ahead of time and promptly exposed the occupiers’ attempt to carry out reconnaissance and subversive activities in the border region,” the special service says.

According to operational data, a hacker group from Russia controlled by the special services of the Russian Federation, which specializes in hacking electronic systems of infrastructure facilities, was involved in the cyber attack.

“The SBU warns that such attacks by the enemy may occur in the future, so it calls on citizens to be careful, to pay more attention to the security of their computer networks, to use complex passwords for this and to change them periodically,” the SBU emphasized.

On the basis of the collected facts regarding this case in the border region, the issue of opening criminal proceedings under Art. 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized interference in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks).

Comprehensive actions are underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime and bring the culprits to justice.

The SBU appealed to Ukrainians to be vigilant and immediately report suspicious cases to the competent authorities of our country.

We will remind, Russian hackers attacked the German government website after the decision to supply Leopard tanks to the Armed Forces.
