She admitted that Maguchih and other Ukrainian athletes hardly understood her opinion.
Russian high jumper Maria Lasitskene commented on her message to Ukrainian Yaroslava Maguchih, in which she reacted to the war for the first time in five months. The Olympic champion of Tokyo-2020 called her silence a mistake.
Lasitskene is quoted by the propaganda publication “R-Sport”. She admitted that Maguchih and other Ukrainian athletes hardly understood her opinion.
“I admire her strength of spirit. And I tried to explain to her what’s in me, what’s wrong with me. I apologized for writing only now, explained why. And ended like this: “Most likely, you won’t understand me.” But she shouldn’t understand me. No one should. My huge mistake, I think, was that I did not find the courage to write to them immediately after the events in Ukraine began. And it oppresses and destroys me. I was sure at the time that they don’t need my words. And when I said them, they didn’t believe me,” said Lasitskene.
Maguchih said before that now she no longer has an idol, meaning Lasitskene.
