The countries of the European Union should start supplying tanks to the Ukrainian military. This will help them to de-occupy the territory seized by Russia.
“Ukrainians need weapons with which they can fight to regain their territory, which means, for example, Leopard II tanks, which several member states have,” Metsola emphasized.
She added that the discussions on the supply of tanks should become key for the EU against the background of the escalation by Russia and the successful counteroffensive of the Ukrainian military. According to the head of the European Parliament, countries that agree to start supplying tanks to the Armed Forces will receive compensation from the European Peace Fund.
Metsola also emphasized that the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine “will not lead to a significant decrease” in the overall defense capability of individual countries. She said she would repeat her call during a summit in Prague on October 7, which will be attended by EU leaders.
