Andriy Yarmolenko summed up the results of the match against Scotland in the League of Nations.
On Tuesday, September 27, as part of the sixth round of the League of Nations group tournament the national team of Ukraine could not beat Scotland. The game ended in a 0:0 draw.
This result did not allow Ukraine to enter the A division of the League of Nations.
Captain of “blue and yellow” Andriy Yarmolenko commented on the outcome of the meeting. The forward noted that the players of the national team drew conclusions from the mistakes of the first match against the Scots and played completely different football, but the realization of the moments failed.
“It is clear that we needed to win. I think you saw that there was one corner, another. We did everything we could. I think the boys are well done. They gave their best, gave all their strength to get a result.
There was a coaching attitude – to play aggressively, win tackles, win the fight, because in the first match we lost all that and lost the game. In football, it is really important to win the fight. Win heels. I haven’t seen the stats yet, but I’m sure we played much better than in the first match. We played, one might say, at home. The stadium was full, the fans pushed us forward. I think we deserved to win. But when you don’t score chances like I had, you don’t win the game.
This happens. Sometimes you can score from some half-moment, when no one expects it, some ricochet or something else can happen. And sometimes you don’t score 100% chances and it costs the team a result. Of course, it’s a shame that they didn’t score their moments. If they had scored, the game would have been different.
Of course, I understand that I am an attacking player and must score goals. This is so clear. I understand that I have to score such moments,” the publication quotes Yarmolenko as saying Tribune.
Let’s add that the match against Scotland was the 112th in the career of Andrii Yarmolenko in the Ukrainian national team shirt. Thus, the 32-year-old forward surpassed the legendary Andrii Shevchenko (111 matches) by this indicator, becoming the best player in the history of the national team in terms of the number of games played.
