The 14th competition day ended in Beijing. It has become iconic for Ukraine since the last competitions with the participation of its athletes took place. However, he did not bring medals to our team. And there is no chance for that, because the Ukrainian Olympians have finished their performances.
According to today’s results, the advantage of the Norwegian national team over the nearest pursuer – Germany – is five gold medals. In terms of the number of awards, Norway is also ahead of all other teams, with 34 medals. The closest pursuer is OQR – 27 awards.
Ukraine’s position remained unchanged – 23rd place. At the same time, the Ukrainian national team is guaranteed not to improve its situation.
Norwegian achievement
In total, today the athletes competed for five sets of awards: two in biathlon and freestyle, and one in skating.
Two days before the end of the 2022 Olympics, Norway set a new absolute record for the number of gold medals – 15. This is more than one medal than in 2018 – when the Norwegians and Germans finished the Games in Pyeongchang with 14 awards of the highest standard. The same figure in the Canadian national team in 2010.
In fairness, it should be noted that the number of medal competitions at the 2022 Olympics has increased by 6 compared to the previous Games in Pyeongchang – to 109. And in Vancouver, Canada won 14 gold medals out of 86 possible.
In biathlon without failure, but also without medals
The last award for Norway was brought by biathlete Johannes Boe. The leader of this Scandinavian team triumphed in the mass start, repeating several historical records of the Winter Olympics.
Ukrainians – Dmytro Pidruchny and Artem Prima – failed. The first took 24th place, and the second finished in 28th place.
The leaders of our men’s team failed to shoot and therefore finished in low positions. Both made seven mistakes – the worst in the race.
The men’s mass start was the final race in biathlon in Beijing. It was attended by 30 best athletes at these games.
And before that there was a women’s mass start – and it brought a little better emotions for Ukrainian fans of the most popular winter sport. However, they are also medal-free.
Only one biathlete ran from Ukraine – Julia Jima, who started at number 19. At the start of the race, the 31-year-old Ukrainian fell and got to the first shooting last.
But in the end, the current leader of the national team of Ukraine was able to gather and showed character, in addition, made the least number of misses among all biathletes – only three.
So Julia finished in 7th place. Justin Brezaz-Boucher from France won.
Biathlon results
In total, 11 sets of awards for biathletes were drawn at the Beijing Olympics. Only 7 countries managed to win medals, and Ukraine finished without awards, although on the last day it showed the best result at the Beijing Games: Yulia Jima took seventh place.
The highest number of medals at the 2022 Biathlon Olympics was won by three athletes: Norwegians Johannes Boe and Martha Olsby Roeseland, and Frenchman Quentin Fillon-Maye – five each.

The second doping of Ukraine
The second positive doping test was recorded as part of the Ukrainian national team at the Olympics. It was handed over by 28-year-old bobsledder Lydia Gunko.
I reported about it International Testing Agency (ITA). In the doping test of the Ukrainian athlete found a banned substance from the WADA list – dihydrotestosterone (a more active form of testosterone).
Lydia Gunko passed the doping test on Monday, February 14, during the competitive period at the 2022 Olympics.
Ukrainka was temporarily suspended from the competition, Gunko has the right to appeal this decision in court. She may also be asked to open a doping test B. For her, the Beijing Olympics was the first in her career. And in general – she is the first Ukrainian in history in bobsled competitions at the Winter Games. Gunko finished in the last 20th place in the monobob tournament.
28-year-old Lydia Gunko literally “scratched” her license for the Olympics: in the final week of selection Gunko won bronze in monobobe competitions, which allowed her to rise from second reserve to a full participant in Beijing 2022, leaving behind Italy.
Lydia used to go kayaking and canoeing, as well as strongwomen. She moved to bobsleigh for the opportunity to perform at the Olympic Games.
This is the second positive doping test in the Ukrainian national team at the 2022 Olympics: doping was also found in the blood of skier Valentina Kaminska, who announced the end of her sports career the day after.
The seventh record of the Olympics
For the second time in Beijing, Chinese skaters Sui Wenjing and Han Tsung set a world record in sports couples. The duo has already performed at this Olympics in the short program of the team tournament, where China took fifth place. Then Sui and Khan surpassed the achievements of OCD representatives Anastasia Mishin and Alexander Gallyamov, earning a record 82.83 points.
The next time the Chinese went on the ice in the individual championship. In the doubles competition, they showed the best short program among the participants and improved the result compared to the team by 1.58 points. The judges rated their performance at 84.41, which is a new world record.
Sui and Han’s world record is already the fifth in figure skating at these Olympic Games and the seventh overall among all sports.
