What a church holiday today, January 25
January 25 in the church calendar – the day of commemoration of the great martyr Tatiana (Tetiana) of Rome. She was born in a rich Roman family. The girl’s father was elected consul three times. He secretly professed Christianity, and therefore he also raised his daughter in this faith. When Tatiana came of age, she was indifferent to wealth and other goods. The girl fell in love with a pious life with all her heart and wanted to give herself to the Church, refusing marriage.
For virtue, devotion to God and other virtues, Tatiana was made a deaconess in the Roman temple. All her time she prayed, helped the sick, the poor and visited prisons.
When the lands were ruled by the young emperor Alexander, she suffered martyrdom from the city governor Ulpian. Tatiana was taken to the temple to worship pagan idols there. However, the saint began to pray and suddenly an earthquake began, which split the idols into pieces. For this, the holy woman’s eyes were gouged out. But she steadfastly endured all the torments and prayed that the torturers would be revealed to the spiritual truth. All the executioners believed in Christ, fell on their faces and raised their hands to heaven. For this, they were first tortured, and then executed.

The next day Tatiana was tortured again. They stripped her, cut her body, beat her. But suddenly, instead of blood, milk began to flow from her wounds, which turned into incense in the air. And the torturers themselves felt terrible pain. Nine of them even died on the spot.
On the third day of the holiday, they were brought to court again. However, everyone saw that overnight she became completely healthy. They began to persuade her that the woman should make a sacrifice to the goddess Diana. Then the saint crossed herself and prayed loudly. There was a roar of thunder, and lightning burned the very priests and idols.
The martyr was again tortured and thrown into prison. At night, God’s Angels appeared to her and healed all her wounds. In the morning, Tatiana was taken to the Colosseum and the hungry lions were let down. However, the animals lay down at her feet and began to lick her hands. And when the lions were brought back to the cage, they tore one of the executioners to shreds. Saint was thrown into the fire, but he did not take her body. Pagans thought that Tatiana was a witch, and therefore decided to cut her hair (in ancient times, it was believed that the hair contained all the power of a sorceress).
The next day, Tatiana was brought to the temple of Zeus, but she began to pray again, and the idol fell. Tortured executioners decided to execute the woman. Along with her, other Christians were martyred, including Tatiana’s father. It happened around 225.
And on January 25, the church honors the memory Saint Sava, Archbishop of Serbia. Since childhood, the monk was interested in Orthodox manuscripts, and also diligently studied specifically spiritual subjects. His real name was Rostislav. In his youth, he secretly left his parents’ home to serve in a monastery in Athos and teach sacred science. He managed to convince his father and accept the tonsure. Very soon he received a high spiritual rank.
With his blessing, Sava sprinkled many churches in Serbia, and also converted many people to the Christian religion. The monk also traveled the world and communicated with various people. The saint ended his journey in Bulgaria, where he died.
